Thank you for your interest in TELJ!
Applications are currently closed.
If you are a 1L, 2L, 3L, LLM, or dual-degree student at Texas Law, you are eligible to join the Texas Environmental Law Journal! If you are a current Texas Law student, you can apply over the summer through the Multi-Journal Write-On. Our TELJ-specific application will open early in the Fall 2025 Semester.
How to Become a Student Editor on Texas Environmental Law Journal
We add student editors in two main ways: All-Journal Write-On and Semester Cite-Ons.
All-Journal Write-On: We encourage all students to participate in the All-Journal Write-On Competition held in May of each year. Indicate your interest in TELJ, and we will happily consider you for a staff-editor position—even if you accept an offer from another journal!
Semester Cite-Ons: The TELJ Board also conducts two cite-ons for 1Ls, 2Ls, 3Ls, LLMs, and dual degree law students in September and January solely for the purpose of identifying students with an interest in participating in TELJ. The cite-ons do not require original written work, are primarily used to gauge experience with the Bluebook for training purposes, and are a more approachable way to join TELJ. We encourage everyone to apply, even if you have limited experience with the bluebook. Do your best good-faith effort on the cite-on and we will teach you the rest.
If you have any questions about joining TELJ, we encourage to you to visit our journal office in TNH 4.128 or e-mail us.
FAQs for Cite-On
· I don’t have a lot of Bluebook experience, and this application includes citation edits. Will this negatively impact my ability to join?
· Not necessarily! The purpose of the edits in the application are to determine your level of experience with the Bluebook for training purposes. We understand that many students have minimal experience with the Bluebook, particularly 1Ls in the Fall semester.
· I’m a 1L/LLM/Dual Degree law student. Am I eligible to join?
· Absolutely! As long as you are a student at the law school, we would love to have you join! Unfortunately, we cannot accept undergraduate students for membership.
· I am not sure if I want to pursue environmental law. Would I feel out-of-place on TELJ?
· Many of our members have an interest in environmental law, but many of our past and current members are pursing legal careers outside of environmental law as well. All of the articles will be based on an aspect of environmental law, but TELJ is not exclusive to students pursuing environmental law as a career.
· What is the time-commitment required of a TELJ member?
· The time commitment is very manageable. All staff editors are assigned 5-10 footnotes to edit per week for approximately 10 weeks each semester. We strive to schedule these cycles as early in the semester as possible in order to avoid finals season. Editors who become Senior Editors or Ed. Board members in later semesters will have different time commitments.
· Why should I join TELJ?
· TELJ strives to provide a community for law students at the University of Texas School of Law—both those particularly interested in environmental law and those who simply want a journal experience. Many of our members are interested in pursuing environmental law, and as an official publication of the State Bar of Texas' Environmental and Natural Resources Law Section, TELJ provides members with opportunities to make connections with practicing environmental attorneys in Texas. Some members are simply happy to have a law school community, some armadillo merch, and free food!
